STUDY

The CII launched a new qualifications framework in 2004 which is designed to provide a clear path for those looking to develop their career in today's insurance market. The framework gives candidates the following study options:-

Award In Insurance
The Award in Insurance is the logical starting point for someone who is new to the insurance industry and/or is not yet ready or prepared to commit to studying for a full qualification. The Award is designed to provide a platform for a family of introductory-level study programs which provide recent school leavers, or those embarking on work based study for the first time, with basic fundamental knowledge on which they can build. The CII will be making 2 study courses (the Foundation Insurance Test (FIT) and Creditor Protection available under the Award Banner. It is the intention of the CII to add further courses in the future.

As a guide, the CII recommend that you allow a minimum of 40 hours study - this equates to approx: four hours of study a week over three months. The exam takes the form of a two hour paper consisting of 100 multiple choice questions.

Certificate In Insurance
The Certificate in Insurance is ideal for individuals working across a wide range of organsations and roles. It provides a firm grounding in insurance essentials and is suitable for staff within insurance companies, brokers and related organisations, whether they are directly involved in insurance practice or are employed in support functions such as human resources, marketing, IT and finance.

This qualification is the first step to becoming professionally qualified and as such, its merits are widely recognised by employers throughout the insurance industry. To achieve the Certificate In Insurance you must accumulate 40 credits.

All the Certificate level exams are two hours in duration. The format differs between papers from multiple choice questions to mini case study multiple choice questions. The CII recommends that you allow a minimum of 50 hours study for each Certificate exam - this equates to 4 hours study per week for a three month period.

Diploma In Insurance
The Diploma in Insurance offers a thorough grounding in key topics and enables candidates to select a study path which meets their job requirements and personal preferences. The flexibility makes the Diploma directly relevant to their preferred career path, be it, for example in pesonal lines, commercial Insurance or life assurance.

To achieve the Diploma you must accumulate 110 credits. All exams are written and are three hours in duration. The format differs between subjects and can include short answer questions, case studies and essay questions. The CII recommends that you allow a minimum of 96 hours study for each exam, which equates to 4 hours a week over a six month period.

Advanced Diploma In Insurance
The Advanced Diploma is a comprehensive assessment of market knowledge and understanding. Those who achieve it can lay genuine claim to being an insurance professional. Candiates can develop a bespoke learning programm that matches their requirements and career aspirations. Advanced Diploma candidates can select study units from across the entire CII qualifications framework, which means they have access to 49 subjects currently available. Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma entitles the holder to apply to use the universally recognised designation "ACII" (CII membership and Continuing Professional Development requirements will apply )

To achieve the Advanced Diploma you must accumulate 290 credits minimum. The CII recommends that you allow a minimum of 120 hours study for each exam which equates to five hours study per week over six months.

Certificate in IT for Insurance Professionals
The Certificate in IT for Insurance Professionals is the only qualification designed specifically to cover IT issues and responsibilities in the insurance industry. Developed jointly by the CII and the The British Computer Society (BCS) it provides evidence of a broad understanding of the principles and use of IT in insurance, independent of any particular software or hardware platform.

The exam is open to everyone. The exam is an Advanded Diploma subject worth 30 credits which can count towards the Advanced Diploma qualification. The exam is a three hour paper consisting of short questions, longer application questions and a case study. The examiners recommend you devote 120 hours study for this exam.

Fellowship
Fellowship is the CII is universally regarded as the premier qualification for those working in the insurance industry. This qualification involves continuing professional development over a three year period, undertaking a Business Ethics Programme, and evidencing a major achievement such as a dissertation.
